Another Psychoanalyst

As the title suggest Wilhelm Reich was a psychoanalyst, and started off as an understudy to Sigmund Freud which goes someway to explaining why Reich was a bit of a nutter. Like Freud, Reich believed that sex was the key to everything, rather than focus on individual neurotic symptoms Reich focused upon character structure and thatneurosis is rooted in the physical, sexual, economic and social conditions of the patient. His foray into this field turned him into a somewhat controversial figure. One of his many strange (and to me ridiculous) theories was that the key to happiness was a perfect orgasm (i'm paraphrasing here as i dont know the exact quote but it's still a strange concept). He claimed to have discovered a primordial cosmic energy, which he named 'orgone'. This then led to the creation of orgone energy accumulators, in other words sex boxes which 'cured cancer'. Reich wrote a book called The Sexual Struggle of Youth, which again was widely ridiculed. This hadn't bothered him before now, but this was different, this was the Nazi press...needless to say he fled, ending up in the U.S.A in 1939. They didn't appreaciate the accumulators too much either. They were banned and he was jailed for two years and the FDA burned most of his publications...and they say U.S.A is a free country, although i agree with them on this occasion...Reich was living in lala land.
